humus underlying hearth 1, a structure of reddened stones within the LF horizon or at the surface of the humus
Comments
GcEg-4, Lac Clairambault, comments by D. Denton: The stones associated with structure 1 are interpreted as having been used in a sweat lodge. Given the location of the stones within the LF horizon, we feel that there is a strong possibility that this structure was employed by the occupants of the habitation associated with structure 3, located nearby. The maximum date from the underlying humus (QU-1200) does not contradict this interpretation. The modern date obtained for structure 3 (QU-1243) agrees with the late historic artifactual context of this platform hearth. QU-1194 is tentatively accepted given the pedological evidence (poor faunal preservation and absorption of the deposit into the humus) of the relatively great antiquity of the structure. However, it is possible that QU-1194 could be read as a maximum date. Other evidence should be sought to support the date.
