- GaEk-1, Lac Caniapiscau, comments by D. Denton: Following the partial excavation of this site in 1980, it was suggested that structure 3 probably represented a more recent occupation of the site than structure 2 (2a and 2b). Following the more complete excavation it was also suggested that structures 5-6 represented a more recent occupation of the site than structure 3, and that structure 1 was roughly of the same general antiquity as structure 2. The original hypothesis regarding the chronological relationship between structures 2 and 3, based on the disturbances of the occupation floor, was maintained. The 14C dates reverse this relationship and strongly suggest that structure 3 (QU-1395, Beta-10356) is significantly older than structure 2. The presence of a piece of metal (now known to be brass) and a small flake point of Ramah quartzite also tend to support the late date associated with structure 2b (QU-1238). The 14C chronology agrees with the hypothesis that structures 5-6 (QU-1419) are much more recent than structure 3 and the underlying structure 4 (Beta-10355). Recent analyses of the pedological and settlement pattern data from the site tend to support the view that structures 3 and 4 are the oldest, 5-6 are of intermediate age, and 1 and 2 are the most recent. This view requires rejection of QU-1245.
