- Comments
- CkEe-5, McInnes: This is a late Middle Woodland and possibly early Late Woodland site associated with projectile points of the Jack's Reef corner-notched type. Comment: Martijn noted on receipt of GaK-1276 and GaK-1277 that the former was expected to be the younger of the two samples, because the pit from which it was obtained appears to have been dug from a higher level. The surprisingly old date of GaK-1276 is a puzzling problem. Unfortunately, the cultural material in direct association with it does not provide clues as to its chronology. On the basis of cultural material from the rest of the site, the date seems much too old. Although the pit extended only 45 cm from the surface, it is possible that its stratigraphy was more complex than was originally thought. For example, one pit may have been superimposed over a lower one of considerably greater age. GaK-1277 is earlier than expected but seems acceptable on the basis of recovered cultural material. The GSC-1393 result is acceptable, but the GaK-1495 result is somewhat younger than originally estimated. Both samples were from the same level. The GSC date was expected to be younger than GaK-1277 from the level below. Given the four dates, it seems evident that GaK-1276 must have been contaminated.
