- BjFj-1, Dawson: As the only Iroquoian site in the city, it is considered the most likely candidate for the site of Hochelaga, visited by Jacques Cartier in AD 1534. Pendergast notes that the date supports the identification with Hochelaga, but study of the artifacts warns against assuming that Dawson and Hochelaga are synonymous. Assuming that Cartier's Hochelaga was an Iroquoian village, the Dawson site may be (1) Cartier's Hochelaga; (2) a site pre-dating Hochelaga but containing trade goods that trickled in from Tadoussac before Cartier arrived; (3) a site post-dating Cartier's visit, being a relocated village of the Hochelagans; (4) a site post-dating Hochelaga, being that of a group unknown to Cartier; or (5) a site coeval with Hochelaga but unknown to Cartier. In any case, the Dawson site is the latest known Iroquoian site in the St. Lawrence River valley and probably represents very closely the material culture of Cartier's Hochelagans.
