- Comments
- BdGr-10, Coulter: This is a palisaded Huron village covering 3.2-4.0 ha. It was occupied during the time of the initial introduction of European items into Victoria County, thus providing a minimum date for this occurrence. It was also occupied during the time of the destruction of the St. Lawrence Iroquois. Cooper and Savage (1994: 21-22) report that from an estimated 50000 faunal remains recovered during 1977 and 1978 excavations, Hale examined 654 from a single midden and analyzed the 98 identifiable mammal specimens. White-tailed deer dominated her sample, but dog and beaver appear as important, and many smaller species were present. Elliott examined some 20000, noted that this represented a recovery from <10% of the site, and identified 74 vertebrate species. She suggests a concentration of exploitation on bony fish and passenger pigeon, with large mammals only an incidental food source and occupation in spring/summer/autumn. Most artifacts were modified fragments whose function could not be identified.
