Comments
BeFv-4, Roebuck: This St. Lawrence Iroquois village covers 3.25 ha and is surrounded by both a palisade and earthworks. M-1538 was assembled from three widely separated areas on the site, all from undisturbed deposits. The sub-samples were catalogued 301, 302, and 303, and depths are measured from the base of the plowzone which is about 45 cm deep. No. 301 was from charcoal-flecked grey ash, 25-65 cm depth. No. 302 was from grey ash and black midden soil, 25-60 cm depth. No. 303 was from mixed grey ash and black midden soil, 20-25 cm depth. The combined sample consisted mainly of wood charcoal but included some corn, beans, and cherry and plum pits. The assumed 13C ratio represents the most conservative possible estimate.
