- NiHf-57: This site consists of about 7 Pre-Dorset tent rings. Some stones have been used and reused to form a large white cross for the airstrip and a support for an oil drum full of sand. One possible tent ring has been partially bull-dozed. A small surface collection was made. Rowley recommends that the site be mapped and surface collected. The site was briefly revisited in 1992. The site lies in the direct line of the runway extension. It is only about 130 m from the present end of the runway. A single chert blade was collected from the easternmost tent ring (Rowley, 1992). In 1995, Rowley reported that one of the barrels marking the centre of the proposed runway extension has been set up inside one of the tent rings and that an aerial photography marker has been constructed of rocks which formed the edges of serveral of the tent rings. She reports at least 22 features including 15 tent rings, 4 caches, 2 children's playhouses and a midden area. She recommends the site be mapped and excavated prior to any extension to the runway as it will be completely covered (Rowley, 1995). Although extension of the airstrip is not curently pending, Stenton conducted mitigation in 2002 as part of an archaeological field school. Most of Rowley's features were relocated as well as one additional feature and all were mapped. Excavations and screening yielded lithic artifacts including burins and microblades, organic artifacts including wood, antler, ivory and bone items, faunal and soil samples. The excavations yielded 1991 artifacts, although 86% of this total (n=1723) consists of lithic debitage.
