- Comments
- OdPc-2, Joss: A thin stratum of bones, stone chips, and Dorset artifacts covers an area of about 900 sq m. This stratum overlies terrace gravel at depths ranging 0-18 cm. No structures were noted. The bone industry is typical of early Dorset in the eastern Arctic. McGhee comments that the date is somewhat more recent than expected by comparison with dated Dorset components in the eastern Arctic. Its acceptance would imply that the "early" phase of the Dorset culture persisted to a later period in the central Arctic than in the eastern, an interpretation also suggested by the relative scarcity in the central Arctic of components representing more developed phases of the Dorset culture. The shallow depth from which the sample was taken, however, warns of the possibility of contamination due to floral, rodent and frost activity.
