- DdIn-1, Heron Bay: Seriation of Laurel materials in northern Ontario indicates that this site is one of the earliest Laurel components. Wright initially considered all of the radiocarbon dates to be too late, but with further work many of them now appear acceptable. For example, Dawson (1980: 54) notes that with few exceptions Laurel dates from northern Ontario fall within the range of the Heron Bay dates. Reid and Rajnovich (1991: Table 1) include all but the youngest Heron Bay dates in their compilation of Laurel dates. Cooper and Savage (1994: 41) note that faunal preservation at Heron Bay ranged from excellent to unrecoverable punk. Evidence of percussion fracturing was common. Despite low bone frequencies, fish are judged an important resource. This summer campsite, possibly occupied also in October, was likely used many times over a substantial period. Fifty-four artifacts include awls, beads, harpoon heads, netting needles, pendants, and beaver incisor tools.
