- Comments
- GbBm-1, Big Island 1: The site is on a barren promontory 2.7 m asl, given the informal name "Point Revenge." Associated projectile points have convex bases, corner-notching, and a general triangular shape, found only in Area B. This cultural phase was not previously known from the interior. The assemblage consists almost entirely of Ramah quartzite. Bird (1945) described "Stone Culture Lodge" with similar points, and sporadic finds have been reported from the Labrador coast. Fitzhugh notes that the site represents coast Indians, probably belonging to the same cultural phase as the Henry Blake-1 site at North West River. The importance of this culture lies in its presence both in the interior and on the coast at the time of possible Viking contact. Thule culture was conspicuously absent on the central Labrador coast at this time. Harp (1963) has similar points from Blanc Sablon-4, and similar ones are found in Middle Woodland contexts farther south.
