- EjAv-1, L'Anse aux Meadows: A Norse settlement was discovered in 1960 by Helge Ingstad who previously set forth the theory that "Vinland" mentioned in Icelandic sagas and discovered by Norsemen, ca. AD 1000, must be in Newfoundland. He made seven expeditions to the site (1961-1968) during which Anne Stine Ingstad was in charge of the archaeological work. Eight houses were excavated, all of them having turf walls except for two dug into the terrace. Nydal (1989) presents a detailed discussion of possible sources of systematic error in the dating of this site. He also reports four AMS dates from the Isotrace lab, three of which are in close agreement with the age given by historical sources for this site. Subsequent work by Parks Canada resulted in a large number of radiocarbon dates, including many that reflect aboriginal use of the site.
