Context
Charcoal from adjacent features 3 and 4, which lie 1.5-2 m apart, at stratigraphiclly similar positions. Fea 3. is a dark lenticular soil stain meas. 50 x 30 cm, and is surrounded by a much larger amorphous zone of lightly stained soil covering a total area of 165 x 80 cm. Feature was 1st encountered ca. 23-25 cm bmgs. Lower part of the stain bleeds upward into the lower sediments of the topsoil. The silt-subsoil contact was likely the prehistoric occupation surface, a conclusion bolstered by the discovery of a piece of charcoal on this surface. Fill contained tiny charcoal flecks, and the charcoal piece adjacent to Feature 3 had to be combined with flecks for a dating sample Microflakes, and 3 seeds weee recovered from the fill. Feature 4 was similar to Fea 3, a light, amorphous soil stain, lenticular in profile, meas a maximum of 110 cm x 100 cm. Feature 4 was noticed 25 cm bmgs, ca. 8 cm deep. Only trace amts of charcoal; no micro flakes, seeds, or artifacts.
