Comments
Arc: Said to be the largest Palaeoindian site in New York state, this site is situated about 5 km north of the Onondaga Escarpment and equidistant between two prominent drumlins that overlook Oak Orchard Swamp. The age of the occupation is bracketed, but not directly determined, by radiocarbon dates. Wood from the base of the alluvium in nearby Whitney Creek dates to 11700 +/- 110 BP (Beta-47308), demonstrating that Tonawanda lake waters had drained from the Arc site by that time. Two dates have been obtained on wood and peat samples from a possible forest floor at the base of strata overlying the occupation remains (BGS-1794, BGS-1795).
