Comments
CeDw-8, Bernard: The site is located on a long narrow terrace overlooking the Tobique River, 5-10 m above summer river level. The site is currently a hay field and is locally known as 'Chantiwok' or 'place of shanty.' Considerable superstition surrounds the site, and no person has been permitted to build here for many generations. Testing produced evidence for a number of pre-contact occupations, chiefly a small campsite area located toward the hillside of the terrace. This is one of the largest excavated assemblages from the upper St. John region. The presence of diagnostic ceramics and lithics in direct association with hearths should place this assemblage in the regional sequence.
